    Assamese Film ‘Aamis’ Shines Bright, Wins Awards In Singapore

    Written and directed by Bhaskar Hazarika, the film is shot entirely in Guwahati

    National Award-winning filmmaker Bhaskar Hazarika’s second Assamese feature film Aamis won two awards in the Singapore South Asian International Film Festival (SAIFF), 2019.

    Hazarika won the Best Director award for the film, while Lima Das won the Best Actor (Female) award at the third edition of the festival.

    Sharing this, Das wrote on Facebook, “This is big!!!! Received the Best Actress award for #Aamis at the Singapore South Asian International Film Festival.”

    Aamis (Ravening) was screened at SAIFF on September 3rd, 2019. The plot of the film revolves around Nirmali, a married paediatrician and Sumon, a PhD student researching on the food habits in the northeastern states.

    Sumon’s study makes him believe that there’s no kind of food that is abnormal and Nirmali is drawn to this idea. The two quickly discover their shared love for food specifically meat.

    Sumon longs for physical contact with Nirmali, while her taste buds grow more adventurous and their relationship takes a bizarre and dark turn.

    Written and directed Hazarika, the film is shot entirely in Guwahati and the cast includes, Arghadeep Baruah, Lima Das, Neetali Das, Manash Das and Sagar Sourav.

    It may be mentioned, Aamis had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival 2019. There it competed in the International Narrative Competition where it got several nominations. Meanwhile, as per reports, the film will release in Assam in the month of November 2019.

    The SAIFF is the largest film premiere destination for South Asian/Indian filmmakers in the United States. The Festival is committed to exhibiting films from South Asia (i.e India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal) and within the Indian Diaspora.

    This year, the festival featured over 40 films from South Asia. Two Assamese films were featured Jahnu Barua’s Bhoga Khirkee and Hazarika’s Aamis.
