The melody of cuckoo, sounds of drumbeats and cymbals reverberated in the hills and plains of Assam with the state heralding the Assamese New Year with full mirth and vigour. Bihu means ‘to ask for prosperity from the Gods during the harvest season’.

Barsha Rani Bishaya: Leading Assamese actress Barsha Rani Bishaya goes down memory lane while reminiscing about her childhood. “Let Bohag bring happiness, peace and prosperity. Whenever I try to reminisce about the childhood days, I remember how as a 4-year-old kid, I used to perform Bihu draped in our traditional mekhela chadar,” she says while speaking to TIME8.
Barsha also asked her fans and friends on Facebook if they had taken bath with black gram and turmeric paste – a ritual performed during Goru Bihu.
Prastuti Parashar: One of the most popular among all Assamese actresses, Prastuti Parashar says she likes to spend her time with family during the Rongali Bihu. “Bihu is all about family time. I always make it a point to spend time with my family at least during the seven days of the Rongali Bihu,” she says.
Jatin Bora: Blockbuster actor of all time, Jatin Bora shared he misses the ‘good ol times’. “We used to look forward to celebrating Goru Bihu. We used to take our cattle and livestock to a nearby pond, wash them with symbolic herbs like black gram and turmeric paste. After the bath, they are decorated with new harnesses and garlands. Now times have changed and so has the essence of Bihu,” says Bora.
Simanta Shekhar: Assamese singer and composer Simanta Shekhar says he is enjoying the Bihu festivities to his heart’s content. “I am enjoying this Bihu season as I do every single year. I went to Latasil Mukoli Bihu yesterday and witnessed the grand event on the day of Goru Bihu,” Simanta says.
Deeplina Deka: Assamese actor and singer Deeplina Deka loves to spend the festival of happiness, feasting with her dear ones. “I will be busy with my Bihu shows but I make it a point to spend time with my loved ones,” says Deka.
