Assam Will Continue Fighting Against Citizenship Bill, Asserts Citizens’ Forum

The bill, if passed, will infringe Article 14 of the Indian Constitution: Forum Against Citizenship Amendment Bill

The Forum Against Citizenship Amendment Bill, while condemning the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government’s move to reintroduce the bill, on October 14th, 2019, said that the people of the state will continue fighting against the bill.

“The bill, if implemented, will violate Article 14 of the Constitution of India. The BJP government is working against the greater interest of the people of the state. But, the people of the state will continue fighting against the bill,” a press communiqué of the forum stated.

The chairperson of the forum, Hiren Gohain said, “The illegal migrants will get the Indian citizenship once the bill is passed. It will jeopardise the identity of the ethnic groups of the state. BJP is probably unaware of the dire consequences that the state will have to face after the implementation of the bill.”

The forum further slammed the state government for maintaining silence in the matter while Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland vehemently opposed the bill.

It may be mentioned that Union Home Minister Amit Shah on October 1st, 2019, during a public awakening program in Kolkata said that the centre will bring the bill. Addressing the convention of the North East Democratic Alliance in Guwahati, Shah had assured the Northeastern states that not a single illegal immigrant will be allowed to stay in Assam.
