‘Assam, We’re Forever Obliged…’: BJP’s Show Of Strength Draws Huge Crowd In Guwahati

The party leaders said the event was attended by nearly 70,000 party workers from across the state

In the wake of massive protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organised a massive booth-level event at Veterinary College Playground at Khanapara in Guwahati on January 4th, 2020.

The rally was attended by saffron party’s national working president JP Nadda, national general secretary Ram Madhav, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass.

The party leaders said the event was attended by nearly 70,000 party workers from across the state. Sonowal and Sarma also took to Twitter and shared a bunch of photographs to show the “thunderous turnout” of karyakartas at the mega rally.

Though the party took out peace rallies in some parts of the state, this is the BJP’s first mega-rally in Guwahati since violence broke out across Assam in December last year.

The BJP has intensified its massive outreach programme over the contentious legislation. On January 2nd, 2020, the saffron party has released a toll-free number where people can give a missed call and register their support to the controversial CAA. The BJP workers will fan out across the state to “bust the myths and spread awareness on CAA”.

“We promise, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi we shall always stand up to your expectations,” Sarma said. He also stated that 3.5 lakh to 4 lakh people would get citizenship in Assam through the CAA.

Das and Nadda accused the Congress of using the citizenship act for political gains and urged the party workers to “dispel misinformation” on the issue.

“There are about 2,300 political parties in India. 54 out of them are regional and 7 of them are national parties. All these 54 regional parties have become dynastic parties. BJP is the only national party apart from CPI(M) that remains ideological,” Nadda said.

He added, “There were 50,000 Sikh families in Afghanistan. Today, only 2,000 families are left in Afghanistan. In Pakistan, the population of Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Parsis, Jains, & Buddhists was 23%. Today, it stands at just 3%. Where did this 20% of people go?.”

Sonowal said that his government is moving firmly on the path of development and progress. He too shared photographs of the event where the BJP workers and supporters are seen wearing caps and scarves sporting the BJP symbol and carrying BJP flags.

The Assam BJP claimed that the members of the Popular Front of India and the Maoists were actively involved in the violent incidents that took place in the state during the anti-CAA protests last month.

It may be noted, the BJP has announced a 10-day door-to-door awareness campaign on CAA. The top BJP leaders will visit states to aware the public on CAA. The saffron party will aim to contact 30 million families in 10 days.
