The Assam Police on Friday rescued a greater adjutant stork from the Dadara and Pacharia village in Kamrup.
Purnima Devi Barman, stork conservationist welcomed the move by the police and thank them for their quick response.
She said that the police have always been active in terms of saving the birds as well as other animals. In this case, she thanked the Kamrup Police for their activeness in saving the bird on time. Even Morigaon police is helping in the rescue of the storks.
Barman added that this time of the year is very crucial for the birds as due to the weather and particularly the storms, the hatchlings fall down from the trees and if this issue is not attended with care most of them die.
The greater adjutants are found across the wetlands of South and Southeast Asia but unfortunate, their numbers are very less. An estimate of 1200 to 1500 are left in the wild and among these, there are about 800 in Assam.
Aaranyak on their official Facebook page too extended appreciation to Kamrup Police for rescuing Greater Adjutant Storks in Dadara-Pachariya village during the lockdown. “We are grateful to SP Partha Sarathi Mahanta and his team for always supporting us for this greater cause of conservation”, they wrote.
