Assam Police Constable, Uncle Sent To Judicial Custody On Charges Of Sexually Harassing Girl In Guwahati

Guwahati Students Sexual Harassment Case: One of the victim's two arrested uncles is an Assam Police constable

An Assam Police constable along with another man who was arrested by the Guwahati Police on September 21st, 2019 in an alleged sexual harassment case registered at the All Women Police Station in Panbazar, have been sent to judicial custody.

As per information available, a Class XI student from Guwahati was allegedly sexually harassed for years by her uncles and cousin brother.  The incident came to light after the victim girl shared her plight with her school teachers and subsequently a case (No 134/19) under POSCO Act and under Section 376/ (A) (B) of the IPC was registered with the police.

“Both the Assam Police constable and the man, who are the victim’s uncles, were arrested and produced before the court on September 21st, 2019. They have been sent to judicial custody,” said Arunima Bhuyan, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Guwahati while speaking to Time8.

Meanwhile, the case took a new turn after the complainant Gautam Sharma made a series of shocking revelations in front of the police on September 22nd, 2019. According to Sharma, the victim’s father was murdered by his own brother in front of his wife when she was a child. Later her father’s sister took her residential custody.

The revelations were made after Sharma contacted the victim’s mother to unearth the gravity of the case and thereafter, learnt that the family had “forcefully taken the custody of the girl after the second marriage of her mother”.

“Her mother had visited Guwahati on several occasions but the family deprived her of meeting her own daughter. On the pretext of applying medical ailments, the girl was sexually exploited several times by her uncles and cousin,” said Sharma.

Meanwhile, the complainant has demanded the case to be tried in a fast track court for speedy trial and also sought Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s intervention into the matter.
