The Congress parliamentarian from Barpeta constituency Abdul Khaleque on August 31st, 2019, said that he was ‘not fully happy’ with the exclusion figure of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). “The names of a number of genuine Indian citizens were excluded from the final list,” Khaleque said.
Besides, he launched a blistering attack on the Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his remark on the NRC. “Who is Himanta Biswa Sarma to say that the NRC is not the red-letter of the Assamese community?” Khaleque said.
On August 30th, 2019, Sarma said, “When so many genuine Indians are out from the list, then how can you claim that this document is a red-letter for the Assamese society.” He further said that a number of people were included in the final NRC list because of ‘manipulation’ of legacy data.
The MP further said that Sarma’s remark insulted the Supreme Court’s direction and also the central and the state government. “He should resign if the government has failed to publish an error-free NRC,” he added.
A total of 3,11,21,004 persons have been included in the final NRC that released on August 31st, 2019 while 19,06,657 persons have been excluded from the list.
