One of the prominent agitating leaders of the Assam Movement, Partha Joy Das breathed his last at his Barpeta residence on August 21st, 2019. He was 62. Das was ailing for a long time and was undergoing treatment in his hometown.
Das was an active member of the movement which started in 1979 under the leadership of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP). He was the one who had registered a case against IPS KPS Gill, the super cop who worked against militancy in Punjab and fought a long legal battle.
A number of students’ bodies, social and political organizations have expressed grief over the demise of Das.
It may be mentioned that the Assam Movement officially ended on August 15th, 1985 after entering into an understanding with the Center which found official expression in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
