After days of protest, the authorities lifted curfew in Guwahati on December 17th, 2019 and restored broadband services in entire Assam. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region, tweeted about the decisions in the morning.
The curfew was imposed on December 11th, 2019 in the wake of violent protests against the newly-enacted citizenship law. The broadband internet service which has been suspended at the same time also resumed from December 17th, 2019 onwards.
The decisions were taken at a law and order review meeting by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. However, there is no official statement yet about resumption mobile internet service or lifting of curfew from other places.
The death toll in police firing on protesters against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rose to four after two youths succumbed to their injuries in Guwahati on December 15th, 2019.
As per information, 175 people have been arrested and 1,460 protesters have been detained across the state. Day curfew has been withdrawn in Guwahati from 6 am of December 16th, 2019.
