    Assam Final NRC Today, Here’s How To Check Your Name Online

    The Assam government said that it will provide legal aid to the ‘needy’ whose names do not figure in the final NRC

    The final list of the National Register of Citizens(NRC) will be published on August 31st, 2019 at 10 am. The list will identify the bonafide citizens of the state. The final list will be made public through a press release from the official NRC handles (NRC website, Twitter and Facebook).

    Ahead of the publication, Assam Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia, who got a 3-month extension of his service by the appointment committee by the cabinet on August 30th, 2019, mentioned that his team has stepped up security to avoid any possible attempt to create unrest. The Assam Police is keeping a hawk-eye vigil on the social media platforms to check provocative messages or rumours about the NRC.

    Also, Section 144 CrPC has been clamped in a number of vulnerable areas across the state, including in the capital city of Assam. The prohibitory order restricts assembly of more than five persons, agitation, demonstration, procession inciting communal violence to name a few.

    It may be mentioned that the NRC update is to identify Indian citizens from amongst all the residents of Assam thereby leading to identification of illegal migrants residing in Assam, who entered Indian territories after the midnight of March 24th, 1971 and to determine the citizenship of the applicants who have applied for inclusion of their names in the updated NRC.

    On August 31st, 2019, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal appealed to the people of Assam to not panic if their names do not figure in the final list as they can approach the respective Foreigners Tribunal(FT).

    On the midnight of December 31st, 2017, a partial draft of the NRC was released and subsequently on July 30th, 2018, the complete draft NRC was released. A total of 2,89,83,677 persons were found eligible out of 3,29,91,384 applicants in the final draft of the NRC. The NRC authorities on June 26th, 2019 published an additional draft exclusion list consisting of 1,02,462 persons.
