    Assam Bans Single-Use Plastic In Sporting Events

    Khelo India Youth Games to be held in Guwahati in 2020

    In wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clarion call for a plastic-free India, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered a ban on single-use plastic products in the sporting events. He also pressed for declaration of the sporting venues as ‘plastic-free zones’.

    The CM directed the officials to showcase Assam and its culture in the best possible way in the sporting events. Earlier, the Janata Bhawan and Raj Bhavan banned the use of all types of plastics inside their premises.

    Sonowal on October 10th, 2019 reviewed preparations of 3rd Khelo India Youth Games 2020. He chaired a meeting with senior officials of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department. The sporting extravaganza will be held in Guwahati from January 10th-22nd, 2020.

    Chief Minister directed concerned officials to create awareness among the youths of Assam and motivate them to be part of the mega sports event. He also directed the department to hold torch rallies in all districts in this regard.

    Khelo India Youth Games are the national level multidisciplinary grassroot games in India held for two categories, namely under-17 years school students and under-21 college students. Every year best 1000 kids will be given an annual scholarship of Rs 5,00,000 for eight years to prepare them for the international sporting events.
