Advocate Indira Jaising Urges Nirbhaya’s Mother To Forgive Her Daughter’s Rapists

According to the new black warrant, the four death row convicts of the Nirbhaya case will be hanged on February 1st, 2020 at 6 am

Senior advocate Indira Jaising on urged Nirbhaya‘s mother to follow the example of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and forgive the rapists of her daughter.

Jaising took to Twitter to make the request shortly after Asha Devi expressed her disappointment when a Delhi court postponed the date of the execution of the four convicts in the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, also known as Nirbhaya case.

“While I fully identify with the pain of Asha Devi I urge her to follow the example of Sonia Gandhi who forgave Nalini and said she didn’t not want the death penalty for her. We are with you but against the death penalty,” Jaising tweeted.

Nalini Sriharan, the lone surviving member of the five-member squad behind the Rajiv Gandhi assassination, was arrested and convicted in 1991. She has been serving a life term in Vellore Central Prison for the past 28 years.

Meanwhile, the tweet of Jaising didn’t go well with Nirbhaya’s mother. ” Who is Indira Jaising to give me such a suggestion? The whole country wants the convicts to be executed,” Asha Devi told reporters.

Badrinath Singh, father of Nirbhaya slammed Jaisingh for not being able to understand the pain of another woman. He claimed people like Jaising earned a livelihood by supporting rapists. He said that rapes were on the increase because of women like Jaising.

    Execution date

A Delhi court on January 17th, 2020 issued a new death warrant for the four convicts who were to hang at Delhi’s Tihar jail on January 22nd, 2020 at 7 am. According to the new black warrant, they will be hanged on February 1st, 2020 at 6 am.

    2012 Delhi Gang-Rape Case

The Nirbhaya gang-rape incident occurred on December 16th, 2012 in Munirka in South Delhi. A 23-year-old female physiotherapy intern was beaten, gang-raped, and tortured in a government bus by six men. Eleven days after the assault, she was transferred to a hospital in Singapore but succumbed to her injuries two days later.

All the accused were arrested and charged with sexual assault and murder. One of the accused, Ram Singh, died in police custody from possible suicide in the Tihar Jail. Three convicts are lodged in Tihar Jail while the fourth one is in Mandoli’s jail number 14.

On September 10th, 2013, the four remaining adult defendants – Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur and Pawan Gupta – were found guilty of rape and murder and three days later were sentenced to death by hanging.  The Delhi High Court as well as Supreme Court have upheld the guilty verdict and the death sentences.

The juvenile was convicted of rape and murder and was sentenced to three years of imprisonment in a reform facility.

The brutal gang-rape and murder of the young physiotherapy intern led to nationwide protests. The movement forced the government to set up a committee to review the laws on rape and crime against women.
