‘Aao, Phir Se Diya Jalaein’: Modi Tweets Vajpayee’s Poem To Remind People To Lit Diyas Today

Modi has urged the people to switch off their lights for 9 minutes at 9 pm on April 5 and asked them to light diyas, candles as a sign of solidarity in the fight against coronavirus

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged the people of the nation to switch off their lights for 9 minutes at 9 pm on April 5th, 2020 and asked them to light diyas, candles, torches or use the flashlight of their mobile phones as a sign of solidarity in the fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

To remind people to light diyas, Modi shared a video of late Atal Bihari Vajpayee reciting his poem Aao, phir se diya jalaein (Come let’s light the lamp).

In the brief clip, former Prime Minister Vajpayee is seen reciting the iconic poem from a stage.

Modi had called for resolve and restraint to fight against coronavirus.

The Prime Minister announced a Janta Curfew on March 22nd, 2020. On March 24th, 2020, he had announced the 21-day nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of the highly contagious virus.

While addressing the nation on April 3rd, 2020 via a video message, Modi urged the nation to switch off all lights for nine minutes and light up candles, lamps or cellphone flashlights on April 5th, 2020.

“On April 5th, 2020, I want 9 minutes from all you, at 9 pm. Listen carefully, on April 5th, 2020, at 9 pm, turn off all the lights in your homes, stand at your doors or in your balconies, and light candles or diyas, torches or mobile flashlights for 9 minutes. I repeat, light candles or diyas, torches or mobile flashlights, for 9 minutes at 9 pm,” Modi said in his address.

He added, “No one must assemble or gather anywhere while participating in this program. Please do not go out on to the roads, lanes or your localities, do it at the doorstep or balconies of your own homes. One must never cross the ‘Lakshman Rekha’ of social distancing. Social Distancing should not be breached under any circumstances. This is the only panacea to break the chain of coronavirus.”
