Dissatisfied over the appointment of Hitesh Dev Sarma as the new state coordinator for National Register of Citizens (NRC), the All Assam Minorities Students’ Union on November 13th, 2019, urged the government to reconsider the matter and appoint an “unbiased and capable” officer to take forward the work.
Speaking to the media persons here at Kajalgaon in Assam’s Chirang district, the president of the minority students’ body Rejaul Karim Sarkar said, “Hitesh Dev Sarma is a communal person. His Facebook posts insulting the Supreme Court of India and the NRC have proved that.”
While urging the government to reconsider the decision to appoint Sarma as NRC coordinator, Sarkar said, “The people of the state want an error-free NRC. Hence, the government should appoint an unbiased and capable officer to take forward the NRC updation works. Sarma should be removed from the post.” He further said that the body will take help of law the government does not take any action in the matter.
Launching a scathing attack at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government, Sarkar said, “The government does not want an error-free NRC. It wants to keep the issue as a political issue for another 100 years.”
Congress parliamentarian from Barpeta Abdul Khaleque dashed off a letter to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal alleging that Sarma is “biased, partial and not trustworthy” to take forward the NRC updation related work.
