The 73rd Independence Day celebrations began with pomp and gaiety across the state including the Kamrup Metro district on August 14th, 2019.
Cleanliness and plantation drives were carried out by the respective district administrations as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. As a part of the celebrations, various competitions, cultural rallies will also be held in the respective districts.

School and colleges are organising essay and speech competitions for the students in their educational institutions based on the topic ‘Role of Mahatma Gandhi in India’s Freedom movement and his Assam connection’ and ‘Role of Assam’s freedom fighters in India’s freedom struggle’.
In Guwahati, the district administration officials cleaned statues of freedom fighters, martyrs, leading citizens put up in the parts of the city.
It may be mentioned that Assam will observe the main function on august 15th, 2019 at the Khanapara field where Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will unfurl the tricolour. Security forces are maintaining a strict vigil across the State with special deployment in and around all sensitive areas and installations.

Apart from the co-curricular activities, there will also be a free show for the students from 12 noon on August 15th, 2019 in all the cinema halls. Reports stated that the halls will screen Bollywood film ‘Mission Mangal’.
Meanwhile, several buildings, shops and lanes in and around the city have been beautifully decked up with the Tricolour. The songs that celebrate the spirit of patriotism are playing in every lane of the city. People would throng the Khanapara playground to watch the parade and colourful cultural programmes.
