Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 9th, 2020, said that the Citizenship Amendment Act will grant Indian citizenship to not more than 3.5 to 4 lakh people in Assam.
“It is about the number. This act will grant citizenship to not more than 3.5 to 4 lakh people in the state,” the minister said while addressing a press conference in Guwahati today.
Slamming the Congress for allowing illegal migrants to settle down, he said. “The people who will get Indian citizenship had settled during Congress rule. Bharatiya Janata Party has not brought them.”
He said that the confusion over the granting citizenship will be clear once the application process is over. “Everything related to granting citizenship will be clear once the application process is over. People will get to know whether we are right or not.”
Sarma further said that the BJP is ready to discuss with the agitators on the act issue. “The door is open to all for discussion on the act. But, it seems that the agitators are interested in forming a new political party to overthrow the BJP,” he added.
