30 Students Injured After School Building Collapses In Assam’s Goalpara

A good building is more important than the boundary wall for the safety of the students: Marjina Khatun

In an incident, at least 30 students sustained injuries after a school building collapsed in Western Assam’s Goalpara district on November 5th, 2019.

As per information, the building of the Helapathori Primary School under the Balijana Educational Block in the district suddenly collapsed today leaving the students injured. Classes were on at the time of the incident.

Speaking to the media persons, Abdul Rafiq, a local, said, “I was at home. Some students suddenly came and told me about the incident. My daughter also sustained injuries. I rushed to school immediately.”

He accused the headmistress Himashri Das of not providing medical assistance to the injured students. “She (headmistress) did not take the incident seriously and asked us not to make chaos which is unfortunate,” Rofik said.

Besides, Rofik said, “The condition of the school building was very poor. Teachers are irregular. Sometimes, we have to take classes.” He urged the state government to take the matter seriously.

Marjina Khatun, another local, said, “The school committee and the headmistress built the boundary wall spending Rs 50,000. But, they did not give importance to repairing or reconstructing the school building. A good building is more important than the boundary wall for the safety and security of the students.”
