Two Assam police officials on July 11th, 2019 were conferred with National awards at Rajendra Bhawan in New Delhi for their various achievements in the last few years.
Bishmita Likhak, a member of Veerangana, women commando unit of Assam police, was conferred with the prestigious “Virangana Savitribai Phule National Award 2019” and Huneshwar Bora, a 24th AP IRBN jawan received the “Babu Jagjeevan Ram National Samman Award 2019”. The awards were presented in presence of former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar conferred by Babu Jagjivan Ram Kala Sanskriti and Sahitya Akademi respectively.Advertisement
Likhak is a resident of Narayanpur located in Lakhimpur district of Assam and Bora is a resident of Kokapathar in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district.
It may be mentioned, Assam Police’s Veerangana was India’s first female commando unit and it was officially raised by former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in the year 2012 to act against eve teasers in Guwahati city. On the other hand, the personnel of the 24th AP IRBN headquarted in Baksa are engaged in both operational as well as law and order duties.
